Natural Medicines for the Treatment of Depression and Anxiety

There are approximately 20 million people who are actively suffering from depression in the United States. Most of these people do not seek traditional medical help for their depression. Anxiety can occur as a side effect of depression, or on its own. While traditional medical treatments are available for both of these mental conditions, there are also a number of homeopathic or alternative treatments as well. Some people believe that these natural treatments are better than traditional medicine.

For years, there has been many natural remedies that are used for depression medication. St. John’s Wort is probably the most well known of these medications. St. John’s Wort is an herb that is widely available at health food stores, supermarkets and pharmacies. It has been used for centuries to “cure” sadness, worry and insomnia. Numerous clinical trials over the years have proven that this natural depression medication works just as well, if not better, than traditional medications for mild to moderate depression.

Other natural medications that are effective in combating depression include: Omega-3 fatty acids, which have been proven to minimize depression when dietary intake is increased; SAM-e, a supplement that is said to increase the levels of serotonin and dopamine in the body, both are contributors to depression; folic acid, a B vitamin that is found to be deficient in people who are depressed and 5-HTP, which is used in the body to create serotonin.

Anxiety is common in almost everyone from time to time. When the anxiety interferes with your daily functioning, you may have what is called generalized anxiety disorder. Like depression, there are several natural anxiety medications available to help minimize the symptoms of this disorder.

Passionflower is one of the herbal remedies for used as anxiety medication. Many different clinical trials have been completed to evaluate the efficacy of this herb in comparison to traditional medical treatments for anxiety. The results of these studies indicated that passionflower is comparable to benzodiazepine medications in the treatment of anxiety-related disorders.

Other herbal remedies used as anxiety medication include: valerian, which is best known for the treatment of insomnia, but can also work for people with mild anxiety; kava, another herb native to Polynesia, this herb has been found to alleviate the symptoms from anxiety, but there is a high incidence of liver damage and GABA, which is an amino acid that works to heighten the GABA receptors in the brain.

Although there are many homeopathic or alternative medical medications for the treatment of depression and anxiety, not every treatment will work for every person. Additionally, if none of these medications are working, it may be necessary to seek traditional medical assistance. For those who are feeling suicidal or homicidal, call for emergency assistance immediately.
